University Of Washington FINAL

Respect, Dedication and pushing father then your limts. We live in a era where the society is about "me, me, me." We have gone from breaking our own limits to saying "well that's good enough." Sad to say even someone like me has been forced to conformed to this tragic truth. After a while things may seem normal until i joined the Moanalua High School Marching Band and Color guard i've realized that having this type of attitude is not okay. Being alive for 15 years it's hard for me to say that i can be a bit spoiled and pampered, But i can't help it. Growing up I was always taught to sit on the side if I get tired or go under the sun if its too hot. I'd never really push myself to be something great. That is why once i joined the Guard I struggled so much.

2014 was probably my toughest year, my rookie year. I couldn't get the routines down and i would always say it's too hard, on top of that I was the only freshman. It was such a new environment. All the upper class men knew each other and thad their own little clicks, I felt so alone. It led me to a point where I had to ask myself "why am i still going to all the practices?" Until one practice our coach came to me while I was doing my routine saying "Come on you got this show all these upper class men out, I know you can do it! Don't be the weak freshman prove me wrong!" Those words make me realize i joined this for a reason it was my choice to write my name on the sign up sheet. After that practice is put myself more out there and actually open my eyes to this amazing program i met an amazing group of girls who ended up enjoying the same things as i did. After a while things started getting easier on me I could get the routines down, make memories with new friends and experience something no one else could. Not saying all the practices were easy but I finally understood that dedication took place in my life more then i thought it did. If i didn't stay dedicated then I would have missed out on the most outstanding program in Moanalua High School.

Marching Band has 3 day practices a week. Which includes afternoon sunday practices. Being put out into the scorching hot sun. The amount of sweat that leaves my body i swear I could fill an entire lake, running sets after sets that makes our legs feel like noodles. My first day I can't even put to words how difficult it was. I could tell the irritation everyone had in there eyes. New information being packed into my brain, and the amount of times i heard "5..6...7...8" are uncountable! Our director notice the annoyed look we gave to everyone. He stopped practice and yelled "DON'T BE LIKE YOUR PARENTS!" I knew exactly what he was coming from. He wasn't saying that our parents are bad people, he was trying to point out not to give up so easily, see as we grow up we are shaped to be just like out parents. After all we did grow up with them. Thinking that listening to them and goint down the same exact path as they did is the best way to go. What we don't realize is that they have shield u us from the real word. Whenever I say it's too hot they would tell me to go sit in the shade for a little bit. If it gets too hard then they would tell me "Oh here let me make it easier." or in other words let me dumb it down for you. I am honestly those kids who would through a tantrum if i didn't get what i wanted or would explode if i couldn't do something right, but i didn't know I was capable of doing everything i thought i couldn't. I was taught to do all that i can do but I didn't see what I could do until i joined Marching Band.

To Conclude Everything Marching Band and Color Guard has probably made the biggest impact on my life that my high school career could offer me. It has taught me everything my parents aren't capable of teaching me. I saw everything in life for a way different point of view and i'm so grateful. Starting my second year in Marching Band it's nice to see the rookies struggle with the same stuff i did, And i know they are gonna realize they treat us like this because all they want to do is make us better people. I am proud to say that Moanalua's Marching Band and Color guard helped me be a better more dedicated, respectful, hard working person in life.

Word Choice Olympics

1.) As I was playing with my brothers with our creative imagination, running back and forth having the time of our lives i heard a familiar voice call my name "Amy" as my head turn to see who was calling me my eyes filled up like a clog sink with tears of joy as i yelled "daddy?" My heart filled with emotion and that empty feeling i've have for 3 years just filled up with joy.

2)Its been a week since i've eaten and i've had no option but to do what i feared most, stealing. I told myself the possibilities on what could happen if i chose to do this horrible decision, but i know if i didn't do this i would never survive. Once I saw the lights we out it was time to do it. Lucky they left the window cracked open. I took a deep breath and entered. It was pitch black I couldn't see a thing i couldn't tell if my eyes were open or close. then all of a sudden a light flicked on, i slowly turned my head and i knew i was done for it.

3. As that one sweat slowly fell down my face my heat started to pound, the crowd started to roar. My mind started dosing off thinking was all those years of practicing really worth it? "I gave up everything for this very moment." I took a deep breath and i served the ball. As the round white ball went back and forth going pass the net farther then anyone can count! My blood started to boil feeling that taste of victory so close but yet so far i took faith by heart and slammed that ball over then net! As my opponent looks at me in fear and depression i knew from that moment all that training was really worth it,

4.The timer was going off my eyes went to grow bigger and bigger! My heart was pounding with excitement. 10Seconds left running back and forth preparing for the moment of truth. 9....8...7...6....5...4..3..2....1.....0. As the timer went off  I was over joyed and ready for one of the best experience of my life. As i placed this representative for pure victory and taste of the liquid gold it contained I just had one thing to say. "Man this is one good Hot Pocket."

5. "I love you" the 3 words that can either break your heart of start something amazing in your heart. You never know where those words can take you, you see for me it didn't take me where i pictured it to take me like i was as a little girl. I though when you said i love you it meant that i will never leave you and we will get married and run off together. As i entered high school with so many goals and expectations I didn't think about boys till i met Bob. He was new me made me feel special. We ended up dating and he said he loved me. I understood "I love you" didn't mean the same as i thought when i was a little girl but i was new to the experience i did't know what to expect when someone would actually said it to me. As the word poured out of his mouth it felt nice. Nice to know that there i someone there for you and someone to turn to all the time. Months go by and things went down hill for me and Bob he said "I wish things could be different for us but i want you to know that i will always love you." That last time he said i love you didn't make m feel special or happy at all because in the end i know that he didn't mean it. What do you expect it was my first love.

college essay

University of Washington
“Tell us a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.”

Respect, dedication and pushing farther where you think you can go. We live in a era where the society is about “me, me, me.” We have gone from breaking our own limits to saying “well that’s good enough.” Sad to say even someone like me has been forced to conformed to this tragic truth. After a while things may seem normal until joined the Moanalua High school Marching Band and color guard I’ve realized that having this type of attitude is not okay.
PRIDE is the motto of our department and is also an acronym. Perseverance respect integrity discipline and excellence is what we stand for. Being in Marching band we should be grateful for all the time that has been sacrificed for us, we have parents making us food at 12am, people making routines for us, taking the time to go all of our practices and making sure that when we performance is amazing, the least we can do is show them respect. That is our number 1 rule. We should always say “Thank you” and we always stop what we are doing to help someone in need. Being disrespectful is a non tolerable thing during practice and they make sure we know that.

2014 was probably my toughest year, my rookie year. I couldn’t get the routines down and I would all say it’s way to hard, on top of that I was the only freshman that got in to color guard, It was such a different environment. All the upper class men knew each other and had their own clicks, I felt so alone. I didn’t understand why I’m still going to each practice. I was lonely, I didn’t get the routine and etc. dragging myself through each practice there was one specific practice that just made me realize that I needed to clean up my act “Come on you got this show all this upper classmen out, don’t be the weak freshman prove me wrong!” Those words saved my butt from almost quitting an amazing program. After that talk I started to get myself out there and was able to meet an amazing group of girls who enjoy the same thing as I did. Not saying that all the practice were easy, But I finally understood that dedication will take you places higher then anywhere you can think of.
Marching Band has 3 day practices a week, we are put into the scorching hot sun where we practice set after set till our legs turn into noodles, My first day all I would do is complain and complain on how hot it was and that is too much things being shoved into my brain. One practice our director talked to the band “don’t be like your parents.” I knew exactly where he was coming from. He wasn’t saying that our parents are bad people he was trying to point out not to give up so easily, see as we grow up we are shaped to be just like our parents, after all we did grow up with them. Thinking that listening to them and going the exact same path as they did is the best way to go. What we don’t see is that we have been shield from the real world. If it gets too hot they will take you out of the heat, If something gets too hard they will tell you “it’s okay you don’t need to do it,” our parents set our push level so low that we won’t survive a day in the real world. I used to be those kids who would through a tantrum if I couldn’t get something right, but I didn’t realized that if I push myself harder and go over my limits I am capable of doing more then what I think. We are taught to do what we can do but we don’t realized what we could do.
To conclude Marching band and color guard has made a big impact on my life it taught me to respect, stay dedicated and keep pushing forward. It shaped me to be a better person and made me be a better person. I’m truly grateful for all that marching band has taught me.
